You’re doing amazing, Mama! I love “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World” – I think I’m due for a re-read! Have you read “Rhythms of Renewal” by Rebekah Lyons? It’s so good!

I am a first-time mom to a 8-month old and it has been tough to find quiet time… the first 4 months were especially hard since I was so sleep deprived, so a devotional was all I could really do. After that point, I read a few books that helped me get back into more structured quiet time because they had accompanying Bible studies. One of these was Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, which was a soothing balm to my soul, My baby was sleeping a little longer in the mornings, so I started doing my quiet time first thing in the morning rather than hoping I can squeeze it in somewhere in the day. My church’s women’s ministry is doing an online Bible study and I’ve been able to have my quiet time every morning while digging into the weekly Scripture and using the inductive bible study method, which I love. It’s been so encouraging for my weary heart in this busy season of teething and meltdowns (both baby and me!)

As a recovering perfectionist, I used to do devotions and most everything about my day by using a checklist. It was easy to read a quick verse and say a short prayer to check off boxes. Then I realized I was only paying lip service to God, but my heart had drifted away from His heart. He does want an intimate relationship with us, not a dutiful time slot in my daily routine. My focus has changed. I love reading the Word, playing worship music, and praying to my heavenly Father…for years now. And one thing I learned to do was not only pray for the Holy spirit to reveal truth in the Bible to me, but to also help me hunger and thirst for God himself! Thanks for this awesome post. Tweeted.

Laurie, thank you so much for visiting today! I’m guilty of the same thing – I’m always writing to my own heart first! Appreciate you, friend!

I was especially struck by the checklist. I do that! I tend to have a checklist (at least in my head) for everything, even spending time with God. We go through the motions sometimes without ever meeting our original intent. Thank you for this good reminder.

I loved this statement amond many other. “We know enough about God to be dangerous. This danger appears in two ways. First, we know He is good and His love is unconditional. This sometimes can give us a license – if not to do what we want, then to just be absent.” I’ve been a belliever for 37 years and it’s still easy to fall back into those habits, especially when you’re a checklist person by nature. Thanks for sharing. Pinning this one!
